A summary of SCIENTIFIC FACTS! (99% of scientists agree on the facts. They are undeniable) Hurricanes increase in strength when ocean temperatures are warmer. The number of Category 4 and 5 hurricanes has almost doubled in the last 30 years. The less ice on our polar surface, the less sunlight gets reflected back into space, and therefore the more the oceans warm. In the past 10 years, we have lost large amounts of surface ice and new chunks fall into the ocean daily. Global sea levels could rise by more than 20 feet with the loss of shelf ice in Greenland and Antarctica, devastating coastal areas worldwide. The Arctic Ocean could be ice free in summer by 2050. Most of our great cities will be submerged. Adaptation is what animals, plants and micro organisms do when their natural habitat changes. At least 279 species of plants and animals are already responding to global warming, moving closer to the poles. More than a million species worldwide could be driven to extinction by 2050- will we be next? Malaria has spread to higher altitudes in places like the Colombian Andes, 7,000 feet above sea level. Heat waves are now more frequent and more intense. Though the planet temperatures have fluctuated up and down over the past hundreds of thousands of years- the past 20 years have seen dramatic increases WAY above the normal fluctuation levels. 2005 and 2006 were the warmest recorded years in measured history globally. Scientists predict 2007 will be even warmer. In the past 5 years alone, heat waves are responsible for millions of deaths. There is no doubt we can solve this problem. In fact, we have a moral obligation to do so. Small changes to your daily routine can add up to big differences in helping to stop global warming.
